Women of Words: Benefitting the Michigan Women's Media Women and Journalism Internship

Join us October 15, 7 p.m., at the historic Masonic Hall, 23715 Farmington Rd., in downtown Farmington, for an intimate evening with women authors:

Brenda Dziedzic, author of Learn About Butterflies in the Garden, has raised more than 3,000 butterflies in her own backyard. She is co-founder and president of the Southeast Michigan Butterfly Association, and can show you how to create a butterfly habitat in your own backyard.

Joy Gaines-Friedler teaches creative writing both privately and for Springfed Arts Detroit Working Writers. She is also a Writer-in-Residence for InsideOut Literary Arts Project. Her book, Like Vapor, was published by Mayapple Press, 2008 and her work has been widely published in literary magazines.

Rebecca Johns' first novel, Icebergs, was a finalist for the 2007 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for first fiction and a recipient of the Michener-Copernicus Award. Her second, The Countess, a fictionalization of the life of Elizabeth Bathory, the “Blood Countess", was published in 2010.

As you listen to authors read from their works, you'll enjoy tea service, desserts and tea sandwiches from Ginger's Cafe. There will be time for questions, and authors will have copies of their books for sale.

This event is a benefit for the Michigan Women's Media Women and Journalism Internship, which will offer student journalists the opportunity to write about women's issues for MichiganWomensForum.com Tickets are $15 and must be purchased by Oct. 10 at MichiganWomensMedia.org, at Sunflour Bakehaus in downtown Farmington (cash or check only) or by calling 248-568-0581. What a Michigan feminist looks like

Michigan Women's Media is celebrating International Women's Day (IWD) and Feminist Coming Out Day on March 8 with a unique project that will help us bring more news to you.

We'd like to show the world what a Michigan feminist looks like – and we need your help, in two ways:

1. Send a headshot* via e-mail to jonihubredgolden@gmail.com, for use on the front of a unique greeting card we're creating in honor of International Women's Day. We're accepting photos through Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011. Please send a higher resolution image (above 200k.)

2. Support our IWD greeting card fundraiser. These full-color, 5 x 7 cards will include information about the meaning of International Women's Day, so you can share this important holiday with the women (and men) in your corner of the world.

This space is a work in progress.

The creation of a Michigan not-for-profit organization that delivers news through a woman-centered perspective will be recorded here. Soon, a group of like-minded women will meet to affirm (or change) Michigan Women's Media, Inc. Mission and Vision statements, develop by-laws and begin the process of merging their collective energy to support this new venture.

One of the goals we hope to achieve is creating a curated list of Michigan women bloggers. Please scroll down to find the list. We hope you will support their efforts and contact us (info@michiganwomensforum.com) if you know of a blog that should be included.

You can learn more about our work by visiting MichiganWomensForum.com The landing page shows what can be done with social media tools by someone who knows very little about Web design. This, too, will be a work in progress.
